In May 2018, most of the opposition parties decided to
boycott the Presidency of Maduro. Maduro reacted very strictly to this
opposition. Many candidates of the opposition parties were barred from running
for office, whereas many were imprisoned. Many of the opposition leaders faced
life threats and thus fled away from Venezuela.
However, the National Assembly kept protesting
President Maduro as a "usurper" and demanded he vacate the office of
the Presidency.
