As the political tycoons
are busy creating history and making adamant statements about their politically
correct positions on Brexit, there is an internal fear that is breeding inside
the population. The most haunting question is about the state of Citizenship-
What will be the aftermath of the Citizenship Status after Brexit?
As Brexit will come into effect from the
29th of March 2019 as Brexit Day, what
will be the citizenship
status of EU citizens who are residing in the UK, and the UK
citizens who are residing in the EU?
So, Theresa May refers
to an agreement between the EU and the UK, whereby 3.2 million citizens of the
EU in the UK; along with citizens of Liechtenstein, Iceland, Switzerland and
Norway will be allowed to live and work in the UK, as these citizens are
protected under the UK law and the British courts. The same will be safeguarded
for UK citizens who are in the EU. This liberty will also be for all those
babies who are born after the 29th of March 2019 and whose
parents avail of this facility. However, all the legal residents EU population
in the UK and the UK population in the EU will remain eligible to leave for 5
years before losing citizenship rights.
Application for New EU Citizenship
The new EU citizenship will be provided
through an online application system. The fee for the same will remain at £72.
Status of EU Nationals
It is important to note here that in case
there is no-Brexit deal, the status of EU nationals with the right to permanent
residence, will remain intake. EU nationals who are working in different
sectors of the UK will be able to continue with their jobs. At the current
stage, people from the EU will get permission to move to their work within the
UK in the "transition" period of the next 2 years. There will be the
provision of a work permit as it prevails in the case of non-EU nationals.
Moreover, innumerable nationwide debates are contradicting this provision. The
reasons are contradictions related to the norms of restricted accessibility to
political benefits, especially voting rights at the local level. The EU wants
to political rights of the EU nationals’ intake, but the UK denies it.
Dual Citizenship
The provision for ‘dual citizenship’ which
refers to citizenship of both the UK and the EU, is yet to be decided. As for the
population born in Northern Ireland, it is legitimate to get hold of both passports.
This particular population with avail the benefits of being EU citizens, and
with a British passport, they will reserve the right for holding UK
citizenship.
For rest of the
population, challenges still await.
